David Ayer To Direct Jason Statham In New Action Pic 'The Beekeeper'

British action star Jason Statham (“Wrath of Man“) keeps churning out various genre projects and had previously attached himself to “The Beekeeper,” an action pic that is said to have incorporated the mythology of beekeeping, which sounds more puzzling the longer you ruminate on the concept.

As the film is heading to Cannes Film Market this month, Deadline reports that “Suicide Squad” and “Fury” director David Ayer is now attached to helm the project that is based on a spec script penned by screenwriter Kurt Wimmer and hopes to be a franchise starter for Miramax.

Wimmer is no stranger to the action genre having worked on “Salt,” “The Thomas Crown Affair” remake, “Street Kings” “Law Abiding Citizen,” and wrote/directed the Christian Bale dystopian actioner “Equilibrium.” Ayer directed the aforementioned “Street Kings” that starred Keanu Reeves as a dirty Los Angeles cop with a young Chris Evans and Forest Whitaker among the supporting cast.

A new synopsis for “The Beekeeper” mentioned in the report reads as follows:

The fast-paced action-thriller, which is steeped in the mythology of beekeeping, follows a man’s personal journey of vengeance which takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as the ‘Beekeepers’.

Statham’s dance card has been full recently as he reunited with director Guy Ritchie for the global spy movie “Operation Fortune” and Lionsgate‘s “The Expendables 4” which was just promoted at CinemaCon 2022. He’s also attached to star in Ben Wheatley‘s “Meg 2: The Trench” which sees the action star tangling with a massive shark. The actor might also return for a “Hobbs & Shaw” sequel at Universal.
