'Narcos: Mexico' Trailer: Your First Taste Is Free As Netflix Explores The Birth Of Mexico’s Drug War

Netflix is trying a new approach with its upcoming season of “Narcos.” For the series’ fourth season, the story shifts its focus from Pablo Escobar and the Cali cartel to tell the story of just how Mexico became the hotbed for the modern drug war.

Narcos: Mexico” focuses on the Guadalajara Cartel in the early-‘80s, led by Félix Gallardo. As seen in the new trailer, Gallardo is the “Rockefeller” of Mexico’s marijuana trade but has his sights set on something bigger — cocaine. As he expands his empire and brings this new drug to Mexico (and elsewhere), he draws the attention of the DEA and Agent Kiki Camarena. As you might expect from a season of “Narcos,” violence is the only inevitable conclusion. Oh, and it’s going to look beautiful and stylish, as always.

Leading the new cast are Diego Luna as Gallardo and Michael Peña as Agent Camarena. The trailer hints at their paths colliding, but we’re not sure if that’ll come to pass in this season or not. The real question is how “Narcos” fans will embrace this new “reset” of the series. The franchise opens itself up to an anthology-take on the stories of drug cartels, but will audiences warm up to Luna and Peña quickly?

We’ll find out as “Narcos: Mexico” hits Netflix on November 16.

Here’s the synopsis:

Narcos: Mexico will explore the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers. Witness the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. When DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined. As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come. Narcos: Mexico is produced by Gaumont Television for Netflix. Eric Newman is Executive Producer and showrunner. José Padilha, Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard are Executive Producers.
