You can argue that one of the biggest “gets” for the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the early stages of its film industry domination was landing Natalie Portman to co-star with relative unknown Chris Hemsworth in 2011’s “Thor.” She would then stick around for the second film, ‘Dark something-or-another’ (desperately trying to forget it). However, since then, films have mentioned Portman’s Jane Foster, but have yet to show her again. That’s all going to change, in a big, big way with “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
During Saturday’s San Diego Comic-Con panel at Hall H, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the primary cast and filmmaker for ‘Love and Thunder,’ which will arrive in theaters on November 2021. Joining the folks from ‘Ragnarok,’ including Taika Waititi, Tessa Thompson (who is now a king on the search for a queen), and Hemsworth, is none other than Portman. But she’s not coming back to play the love interest anymore. No, for ‘Love and Thunder,’ Jane Foster is going to be deemed worthy enough to become Mighty Thor, Goddess of Thunder.
And according to Portman, she is pretty psyched by this news. After the announcement, the actress took to social media to confirm the news and show off some pictures from her appearance in front of the Hall H faithful.
“So thrilled to share the news with you today at #sdcc2019 that I’ll be returning to the @marvel #mcu as female Thor with legends @taikawaititi @tessamaethompson and @chrishemsworth. (Remember this as the before picture for when I get jacked),” wrote Portman.
Now, it’s all well and good that an Oscar-winning actress such as Portman is set to become the newest Thor, but a simple Google search reveals that the actress is 5’3” tall. That’s about a foot less than Chris Hemsworth. And no matter how Jacked she gets, let’s be real, Mighty Thor might be a little shorter than her MCU heroic counterparts. But hey, that hammer is pretty powerful, so who knows?
In fact, in the comic books, when Jane Foster was given Mjolnir and the power of Thor, she would turn from the cancer-ridden, frail doctor (long story, but worth reading, if you have the time) to a tall, “jacked” female badass. Judging by Portman’s post, she’ll be wearing the costume, as well as being Jane Foster, so it doesn’t appear that Marvel Studios is going the body-double, “hulking out” version of Mighty Thor.
We’ll have to see how jacked Portman gets when “Thor: Love and Thunder” debuts in theaters on November 5, 2021.
