Netflix Gearing Up To Pilot ‘The Helicopter Heist’ Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

It looks like Jake Gyllenhaal and Netflix are becoming chummy. The actor will appear in Bong Joon-Ho‘s upcoming “Okja,” which will arrive exclusively on the streaming service next year, and Gyllenhaal’s production company Nine Stories has something else that has Netflix quite interested already.

Deadline reports that Netflix is looking to snap up the rights to “The Helicopter Heist.” Based on the forthcoming book by Jonas Bonnier, the movie will be based on the true story of the Västberga helicopter robbery in 2009, which saw a gang of thieves pull off a $5 million robbery using a stolen Bell 206 Jet Ranger. The thieves were eventually caught, but needless to say, their methods certainly drew plenty of attention.

There’s no screenwriter or director attached just yet, but perhaps it speaks to the heat of the material, that “The Helicopter Heist” has sparked an auction. Netflix is leading the way at the moment, and is used to making big money spends to keep traditional Hollywood outlets from grabbing something they really want. So barring any surprises, it’s probably safe to say they’ll land it and in a few years we’ll be sitting at home streaming the movie.

As for Gyllenhaal, he’ll be doing the press rounds for “Nocturnal Animals” this fall, in addition to shooting Paul Dano‘s directorial debut, “Wildlife.”
