Netflix Picks Up 'Downfall' Director Oliver Hirschbiegel's Six-Part Series 'The Same Sky'

While Oliver Hirschbiegel is still accurately referred to as the director of the meme-spawning “Downfall,” to be quite blunt, he hasn’t quite made anything worthy of similar note in the dozen years that have passed since the release of that film. His attempt to go Hollywood badly backfired with the trouble-plagued “The Invasion,” his pretty decent low key thriller “Five Minutes Of Heaven” went largely ignored, while the less said about the atrocious “Diana,” the better. But could the small screen be where he finally gets his mojo back?

We’ll see, but an endorsement from Netflix is certainly a strong indicator, as they’ve snapped up the rights to “The Same Sky” for all English speaking territories around the world. Directed entirely by Hirschbiegel, the six-part series starring Tom Schilling, Sofia Helin and Friederike Becht, follows the relationship that develops between an East German agent and woman in the West he’s tasked with seducing, during the Cold War, in a story the delves into the lives of those on both sides of the wall during that era.

No word yet on an exact airdate on Netflix, but the show is now in post-production, so I’d wager on perhaps some kind of sneak peek at an upcoming festival (maybe Berlin?) before hitting the streaming service next year. [Deadline]
