'New Mutants' Reveals Opening Scene, New Trailer & Comic-Con Panel

After months…err years of waiting, we now know when “New Mutants” will finally arrive for audiences– uh…the same date as last time. Yeah, don’t get overly excited for a Disney+ announcement, because that didn’t happen today at Comic-Con @ Home. The Marvel/FoxX-Men’ film is coming out… apparently on the same August 28, 2020 date as last time, though strangely enough in the press release there’s zero mention of the date. In the YouTube clip itself, the August 28, 2020 release date is mentioned with a “fingers crossed” note which tells you all you need to know about the uncertainty of COVID-19 and the way it impacts the theatrical industry.

In the “New Mutants” panel, writer/director Josh Boone and the cast of Twentieth Century Studios and Marvel Entertainment “New Mutants” film, including Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga discussed the upcoming original horror-thriller moderated by Ira Madison III. And during this discussion, they revealed the first clip of the movie.

As you likely now, “New Mutants” faced major delays dating back to 2018, when the film was first subject to behind-the-scenes rumors and speculation that Fox (pre-Disney acquisition) was unhappy with writer-director Josh Boone’s first cut and was trying to overhaul the film with significant reshoots and the addition of a CGI character. However, the delays kept coming when the reshoots never happened and Fox was eventually purchased by Disney.

Finally, the Mouse House announced the film would arrive in April. And wouldn’t you know it? A global pandemic hit and forced the studio to once again push the film to this August. Will that stick? Will there be another date announced? Many expected some kind of announcement today in regards to its release, but none came.

“New Mutants” is the last remnant of the ‘X-Men’ universe than began in 2000 and sputtered by the release of “Dark Phoenix.” Now, we’ll have to see if the iconic film universe will go out with a teen-horror bang or if it will be yet another disappointing reminder that Fox really bungled the mutant characters and we’ll just have to wait for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to pick up the pieces. Watch the clip and the Comic-Con panel below and as far as we know, we’ll just have to stick with August 28 in theaters until further notice.
