There could be potential spoilers in this post. If you don’t want to learn anything about this movie, please vacate now (please use that as a rule of thumb for all “Inception” posts).
An international trailer for Christopher Nolan’s self-described metaphysical heist film”Inception” with new footage has debuted on Japanese television along with the unveiling of a few production stills, predominantly centering on native actor Ken Watanabe.
The trailer features a fair amount of new footage including a better look at Watanabe and Marion Cotillard, who so far, have only been seen in brief glimpses in the film’s marketing, as well as more footage surrounding the events that see Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character in his famous gravity-defying fight.
The trailer also seems to suggest that Watanabe’s character (known as “The Tourist” in new posters) is in fact the man employing Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dom Cobb even though he’s been rumored to be the villain of the picture. But it sounds like their relationship is much more complicated that those simple demarcations.
The trailer and many more images below.
There’s definitely a major slice of antagonism about Wantanbe’s character — threatening Cobb with the words, “in my dreams, you play by my rules” — and it’s followed up by a seemingly-spoiler-ish image of the Japanese actor standing beside Cobb’s wife (Cotillard) who suddenly looks like she’s on his side, presumably in a dream…or is it?
An ONTD commenter also adds that Watanabe told the Japanese media that “he couldn’t explain the premise of the film even to his family because you’d have to explain everything and spoil the person for them to understand” and that “filming the movie was like a [rollercoaster] and that it was like filming 5 movies in 1.”
Meanwhile, this image above shows Gordon-Levitt (“The Point Man”) standing in room surrounded by the majority of the film’s major players asleep, hooked up onto the suitcase device. DiCaprio is seated on the left, Watanabe and Hardy lie in the foreground while Page is on the very right seated near two unknown assailants.
The new images also feature more looks at British actor Tom Hardy who thus far only appeared in brief cameo at the end of the film’s last trailer and provides a new look at Dileep Rao whose mysterious role we previously speculated on (again, standing with everyone, maybe they’re not so at odds initially).
It’s a refreshing new look at the film that provides several insights which should top off what we already know. For all the headaches and head scratching, we’ve definitely come a long way since the infamous description of the pic being a “contemporary sci-fi-actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” Now, it’s time for the summer film season’s golden child to shine.
“Inception” hits theaters July 16th.
