Though he notched his first credited screenplay back in 1992 for the forgotten sci-fi flick “Freejack,” it would take over two decades for Dan Gilroy to finally get behind the camera and make his directorial debut. And he didn’t waste the opportunity. His searing satire/black comedy “Nightcrawler” was a knockout that earned Gilroy an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and gave Jake Gyllenhaal one of the best roles of his career. Now, the filmmaker is hoping to recreate that creative magic once again by rounding up the very same people he worked with on that film.

Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo have signed up to star in Gilroy’s next movie, which will be set in the art world. Those are the only details being shared right now, but the project is already generating tons of heat, with Fox Searchlight, Netflix, Black Bear Pictures, and FilmNation all said to be in the mix to pick it up, and a deal is expected to close before the week is out.
The project arrives as Gilroy is in production on his next movie, “Inner City,” which stars Denzel Washington as a defense attorney pushed to the edge. It’s already high on our must-see list for next year, and we’re absolutely thrilled Gilroy has yet another project brewing. We can’t wait to hear what this art world movie is all about. [Deadline]
