No Shocker: 'Bourne 4' Reboot Talk Is "Premature"

Early this week the Internets freaked out. Matt Damon said about the next movie, “There’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one, just because I think we’re probably another five years away from doing it – we’ve got to get a script…”

Most people saw it for what it was speculation on the actor’s part, but some took it as word of god, as if Damon knew the plan. Some fans already annoyed about the too-soon “Spider-Man” reboot, groaned, were annoyed, vexed, dismayed you name it.

But as we suspected, Damon’s quote unquote “announcement” was just that, speculation and very premature. EW spoke to Universal insiders on the project told EW that “they are currently looking at a few story lines and haven’t made a decision.” But of course, it’s a huge project and while they don’t want their cash-cow idling, they are going to move forward with a good plan before they simply just restart the entire series.

Another source says the studio may try to “hire an edgy young director that could lure Damon back into the fold.” We’ve already suggested five directors who we think could easily handle the job. They don’t also have to be as “edgy” as some think (and the relationships with Damon are more imperative than most people think).

Either way, with Paul Greengrass now out of the picture, the plan for “Bourne 4” is still being examined and looked at. They ain’t just going to rush into it. Or as one of the sources tells EW, “Bourne is one of our best and most important franchises. Whatever we do, we’re going to make sure we get it right.”
