'On The Rocks': Sofia Coppola Reveals Photos & Details About Her "Sophisticated Comedy" From Apple & A24

With a number of feature films being delayed into 2021, there are fewer and fewer exciting features arriving this fall, whether it be on the big screen or streaming. However, one of the most anticipated titles that is still going to grace us in 2020 is none other than “On the Rocks,” from filmmaker Sofia Coppola and starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. And now, we have new photos from the film, giving us a hint at what we might expect this October.

In a new interview with EW, Coppola talked about why she’s excited about her forthcoming feature, “On the Rocks,” and what separates the new film from her previous efforts.

“I wanted to do something that was a little bit lighter and more playful with a lot of heart and sincerity,” Coppola said.

The filmmaker went on to explain that the film features plenty of “sophisticated comedy,” which is apparently inspired by “Tootsie” and “The Thin Man,” courtesy of the relationship between Bill Murray and Rashida Jones, as a father-daughter pairing, Felix and Laura, that goes on a tour of Manhattan nightspots as they spy on Laura’s husband (Marlon Wayans), who is suspected of being a bit too close to one of his co-workers.

And yes, “On the Marks” is the first feature collaboration between Coppola and Murray since the acclaimed film, “Lost in Translation.” According to the director, the fact that “Lost in Translation” still has such a following almost 20 years after it hit theaters is the main reason why it’s taken so long for the two to reunite on a new film.

“I never thought I could do something with Bill again, because people have such a fondness of him and ‘Lost in Translation,’” she explained. “I could never recreate something like that, so I never wanted to touch it. But, all this time has passed, and I loved working with him and I love seeing him in film. We haven’t really seen him as this debonair, playboy father at this stage [of life], so I just had to get over it because now we’re in a different phase [of life].”

We’ll have to wait and see how well the duo works together when we can see “On the Rocks,” which is set to debut in theaters and Apple TV+, courtesy of A24 and Apple Original Films, in October.
