Spanish blog Desmondo Hollywood is always on top of everything Pedro Almodovar and it makes sense. He lives in their backyard basically and his new film, “Broken Embraces” starring Penelope Cruz is coming out in Spain waay before the U.S. in May (we don’t get it until November 6). They have a new Spanish-language poster and there’s also four Andy Warhol-looking versions of it as well.
We’ve already posted the international teaser trailer, new first look photos and a whole lot more, but here’s the synopsis of the noir for the umpteenth time: “Broken Embraces is a four-way tale of amour-fou, shot in the style of ’50s American film noir at its most hard-boiled, and will mix references to works like Nicholas Ray‘s In a Lonely Place and Vincente Minnelli‘s The Bad and the Beautiful, with signature Almodovar themes such as fate, the mystery of creation, guilt, unscrupulous power, the eternal search of fathers for sons, and sons for fathers.”
BTW, if you translate the long synopsis (or understand Spanish) that Desmondo has you can find a little deeper info on the film. [Desmondo/Ropeof Silicon]
While we’re at it with posters, here’s the official one for Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and with an exceptional supporting cast of Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, Leelee Sobieski, Marion Cotillard, and Billy Crudup as J. Edgar Hoover. We must admit though, we find this poster very underwhelming. The film hits theaters July 1st. Read our awesome and non-spoilery script review. We called it the (potentially) first great studio film of 2009. Many are saying it has a ‘Dark Knight’-ish Joker vibe and we can’t really argue with that. That might as well be Gotham/Chicago in the background. [Firstshowing/MSN]
BTW, Exclusive footage of “Public Enemies” airs on Entertainment Tonight, tmw evening. Here’s a quick look. [YouTube]
Ed Zwick has announced he is directing the Moby Dick-esque, “Heart of The Sea.” [Variety]
When was the last time Barry Sonnenfeld directed something great? Hmm, probably never and he probably should have stayed a great cinematographer (the Coen Brothers’ “Miller’s Crossing” will always look unforgettable). Anyhow he’s remaking “Scandal Makers.” No, it’s unfortunately not the “Arrested Development” show with Tobias Funke. It’s a remake of a Korean box office hit. [Variety]
Sam Raimi and Jonathan Demme have both been added to the SXSW Film Festival. Raimi will show off early in-progress footage of his horror, “Drag Me to Hell,” starring Alison Lohman and Justin Long and Demme will screen his new, intimate and imaginatively titled, Neil Young documentary, “Neil Young Trunk Show.” SXSW Film kicks off March 13 with the U.S. premiere of “I Love You, Man,” with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel and it’s actually quite good, funny and endearing.
