'Pump Up The Volume' & 'Slap Shot' [Adjust Your Tracking Podcast]

When older films shine a light on the present…

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I bring back a couple of golden oldies from the show’s past. We took this week off from recording because, frankly, there ain’t shit worth discussing at the moment. And so, I’ve put together to previous choices from our podcast segment, HOLD UP, in which we look back at film’s from our past, typically ones we admire, and see if they, in fact, hold up.

With all the unfortunate news at the moment about net neutrality, now’s as good a time as ever to look back at 1990’s Christian Slater vehicle “Pump Up The Volume.” On the back half, you can hear us gush over 1977’s classic sports film “Slap Shot,” a devilishly subversive hockey comedy (also one of my favorite films of all time) that, within its depressed fictional Pennsylvania mining town backdrop, satirizes, often quite cruelly, the dogged, corrupting pursuit of the American dream. That, and it’s really fucking funny.

LISTEN: AYT revisits stylish 90s crime films ‘La Haine’ & ‘Belly’

On occasion, we’ll bring back these older conversations. We hope you like listening, and even better, find these films and give them a spin if you never have. In less than two weeks, we’ll be back with something completely new as we dive into the rabbit hole of the most recent season of “Black Mirror” on Netflix and find paranoid, too-close-to-home connections between it and the 1988 apocalyptic thriller “Miracle Mile,” which we’ll also be highlighting and revisiting. There’s a chance we may include the new Michael Haneke film, “Happy End,” as well. Stay tuned to the feed to find that next week.

And of course, there’s our episode from last week, where we managed to sift through the dearth of interesting new releases to uncover a few lesser-known gems— “Mom and Dad” and “The Road Movie“—well worth checking out.
