Oh man, this sounds like bad news. We haven’t written about “The Road” in months cause there really haven’t ben many updates, but this one is not good.
The John Hillcoat-directed film is apparently falling behind schedule and may not be ready for a 2008 release.
Earlier yesterday, EW posted a story about the rumors that the adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel might not make its scheduled November 14 2008 release date, and then later in the evening The Hollywood Reporter confirmed it.
Apparently the film had been quietly shifted back to a December release date and now it remains unclear if Hillcoat can have the film ready for 2008.
It doesn’t help that the Weinstein Company is having a ton of financial problems and was already planning on releasing their key Oscar-bait, “The Reader,” in December, so two major Oscar-friendly Weinstein Co. releases around Xmas might not be the most ideal thing for an ailing company.
Weinstein execs are expected to meet with “The Road” producers on Thursday to discuss whether the film will come out in 2009 or not. Hillcoat’s film – which stars Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, with smaller appearances by Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce – is still in post production and evidently far behind schedule.
This definitely changes the game Oscar season wise as “The Road” was expected to be a serious contender. This is a major bummer as we were greatly anticipating the film. At this point, it sounds like there’s a strong chance we may not see the film until sometime next year.
“There’s no question Harvey wants [‘The Road’] for 2008. But it may just not be feasible,” says a source.
