Sam Raimi Is Desperate To Make A 'Batman' Film: "I'd Come Running"

It’s not a surprise that Sam Raimi loves superheroes. Even before he directed three ‘Spider-Man’ films in the 2000s, the filmmaker already made “Darkman.” So, we’re not all that shocked that he came on board to helm “Doctor Strange in the Multiverses of Madness,” which is arriving in May. And don’t be surprised to hear Raimi has other superheroes he’d love to tackle down the road.

Speaking to Empire, Sam Raimi talked about his love of superheroes and gave a few examples of characters that he would love to work on in a future film. He’s not saying that these films are going to happen, but if the opportunity presented itself, Raimi would happily say yes.

“I’ve always loved Batman. If I ever saw the Batsignal up in the air, I’d come running,” said Raimi. “If I heard that deep, gurgling laugh of The Shadow coming from the darkness, I would also tentatively step outside. And Spider-Man would be ahead of Doctor Strange, but I don’t want to put him down the list!”

Obviously, Warner Bros. is pretty happy with what Matt Reeves has done with his version of the Caped Crusader in “The Batman.” So, it would appear that Raimi isn’t in line to do a new ‘Batman’ film anytime soon. And while “The Shadow” isn’t a character that has been seen in a while, there was the 1994 film that starred Alec Baldwin. Perhaps, there’s a chance for Raimi to reboot that property? As for Spider-Man, the future of that character seems to be unknown at this time, as “Spider-Man: No Way Home” put an end to the trilogy and set up a new future for the hero. It’s unclear if Jon Watts will return for a new film in that franchise, as he is working on “Fantastic Four.” And do we really need to see Raimi do a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ film? (I can hear the chorus of fans shouting at me for even thinking those words.)

Regardless of the future, Raimi has to put the finishing touches on “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” before anything else can be figured out. That film is a huge undertaking and is seeming to be one of the biggest films of 2022. ‘Multiverse of Madness’ is set to arrive in theaters on May 6.
