Scab! Ed Harcourt Scoring 'Donnie Darko' Sequel, 'S. Darko'

No one in their right mind wants to be part of the sequel-for-cash part deux to indie science fiction cult classic, “Donnie Darko,” right? (the dubiously titled, “S. Darko,” with essentially a new cast that doesn’t include Jake Gyllenhaal or original director Richard Kelly; he’s disavowed the project).

That is unless you’re British songwriter Ed Harcourt who’s signed on to score the film regardless (maybe it’s a little lost in translation across the pond).

Harcourt met new director Chris Fisher at a recent L.A. gig, submitted three pieces of music and the got the gig . The songwriter is apparently making music in the vein of ambient electronic texturalists and avante composers Autechre, Aphex Twin, Phillip Glass and Arvo Pärt. The idea is to make it “surreal and psychedelic, just like the movie.” How about that.

The only person reprising their role in the film will be Daveigh Chase (Samantha Darko, their really wouldn’t be a film without her) Elizabeth Berkely the Stanislavski-esque thespian of “Showgirls” has also signed for the picture. ‘S. Darko’ is set for a 2009 release.
