Kristen Stewart is once again going to France. She previously won a Cesar Award, the French version of the Oscars. Just last year, she was on the jury for the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Now, she’ll be playing one of France’s biggest icons. In “Seberg,” Stewart plays the titular Jean Seberg who was once pursued by the FBI.
Along with Stewart, the film boasts an intriguing acting ensemble. Names like Jack O’Connell, Emmy nominee Margaret Qualley, Vince Vaughn, Anthony Mackie, Zazie Beetz, and Stephen Root round out the cast. Additionally, Benedict Andrews who directed the film adaptation of “Una” takes the helm. Meanwhile, Oscar nominee Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound,” “Black Panther“) serves as the film’s DP.
Here’s an official synopsis:
Seberg is inspired by true events about the French New Wave darling and Breathless star, Jean Seberg (Kristen Stewart), who in the late 1960s was targeted by the FBI because of her support of the civil rights movement and romantic involvement with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), among others. In Benedict Andrews’ noir-ish thriller, Seberg’s life and career are destroyed by Hoover’s overreaching surveillance and harassment in an effort to suppress and discredit Seberg’s activism.
Judging by the plot, Stewart might not actually be going to France. However, playing the famed actress continues her connection to French cinema. Plus, it’s part of what looks to be a redefining point in Stewart’s career. Later this week, Stewart will pursue action stardom in the “Charlie’s Angels” reboot. In January, the long-delayed action/horror flick “Underwater” where she plays the lead will be released.
As of now, “Seberg” doesn’t have a release date, but it’s expected to be released before the end of 2019. So, Amazon Studios could have a viable awards contender on their hands. Stewart has previously garnered Oscar traction for “Clouds of Sils Maria” but to no avail. Maybe, her moment will finally come this time around. AMPAS does love recognizing actors for playing famous actors.
