While it remains to be seen if American audiences will take a shine to the Brit comedy smash "The Inbetweeners Movie" when it lands on our shores next month, or if the MTV remake of the hit show that spawned it will find the teenage audience it's looking for, it seems plans are afoot for a sequel.
"I don't want to give too much away at this stage but we have been developing an idea for a sequel," co-creator Damon Beesley recently told The Sun, though his collaborator Iain Morris cautioned: "…but it's far from signed and like Damon said we want to make sure we have a good enough story to tell." But it's easy to see why a desire for a follow-up is there.
Hitting U.K. cinemas last fall, "The Inbetweeners Movie" was an unparalled smash, besting the numbers of "The Hangover Part II" and staying on top of the box office for four straight weeks, taking $71 million at home and earning more coin from various international territories. Not bad for a movie made on a slim $5.5 million budget. It was a big breakout for a movie with such humble beginnings, as a smutty teen comedy that aired eighteen half-hour episodes on a niche British TV channel E4. But it developed a cult following, and it's clear the drunken, sexual misadventures of Simon, Will, Neil and Jay struck a broader cultural chord.
