Her investigation with reporter Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) quickly sets in motion a cat-and-mouse chase across the city and across time itself.

Reviews thus far have been raves, including ours, which greatly praised the show’s lead. “Elizabeth Moss’ stirring performance at the heart of this grisly tale. There is a reason Moss is a repeat Emmy contender, and she could add another nomination amid the crowded limited actress field.”

The cast also includes Amy Brenneman (“Judging Amy”), “Hamilton” star Phillipa Soo, and BAFTA Award winner Jamie Bell (“Rocketman” and “Billy Elliot”). Moss, Michelle MacLaren (“Breaking Bad” and “Game of Thrones”), and Daina Reid (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) share directing credit for the first season.

Among the series’ long list of executive producers is Leonard DiCaprio, whose production company Appian Way Productions acquired the TV rights in 2013 before the novel’s international release.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Based on Lauren Beukes’ best-selling novel, “Shining Girls” follows Kirby Mazrachi (Moss) as a Chicago newspaper archivist whose journalistic ambitions were put on hold after enduring a traumatic assault. When Kirby learns that a recent murder mirrors her own case, she partners with seasoned, yet troubled reporter Dan Velazquez (played by Wagner Moura), to uncover her attacker’s identity. As they realize these cold cases are inextricably linked, their own personal traumas and Kirby’s blurred reality allow her assailant to remain one step ahead. In addition to Moss and Moura, the gripping drama stars Phillipa Soo, Amy Brenneman, and Jamie Bell.

“Shining Girls” is streaming now, and it’s one of the most intriguing shows on television now. It’s a complex mix of detective crime story, a time-traveling genre picture, a fragmented “am I losing my mind?” memory tale ala “Memento,” and an emotional drama about trauma, abuse, victims, and survival. A lot is going on in the series, and it’s unclear how it will pan out, but we’re hooked so far.
