‘Simon Killer’ Helmer Antonio Campos To Direct ‘Omen’ Prequel

null"The Omen" franchise hasn’t had the best run of luck. The 1976 horror classic spawned three sequels, including one that was made-for-TV, and none of them were well received, nor was the 2006 remake starring Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles. Most recently, the property has been brought to the small screen with the A&E series "Damian," but the big bucks are at the movies. So another attempt will be made to revive the horror brand, but we do have some optimism thanks to the choice of director.

Antonio Campos, who has earned a strong rep thanks to his indie efforts "Afterschool," "Simon Killer," and his latest Sundance sensation "Christine," has been tapped to helm "The First Omen." Ben Jacoby has penned the script, and while no exact story details have been divulged just yet, I would assume from the title a mythology will be created that precedes Damian in the original movie.

So, call us cautiously intrigued by this one. Campos is a distinctive filmmaker with a strong voice, and let’s hope in his first major studio outing, his vision is allowed to shine. [THR]
