“Harry Potter,” “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.” These franchises make up the Mount Rushmore of YA adaptations and studios are falling over themselves to pick up the rights to any YA novel they can get their hands on. It’s therefore surprising that it’s taken this long for Lois Lowry’s “The Giver” to finally get the big screen treatment, so The Weinstein Company is making up time by putting the marketing machine into overdrive ahead of the film adaptation’s release next month.
The “Harry Potter” series notwithstanding, every YA franchise worth its salt has a curated soundtrack meant to whip the kids into an iTunes buying frenzy, and “The Giver” is no different. Set for release on August 5th, the soundtrack, The Giver: Music Collection, will span 10 songs with offerings from Capital Cities, Jake Bugg, Aloe Blacc and OneRepublic, which is the band behind the soundtrack’s first single. You can see a pair of short music videos from the soundtrack—by One Republic and Jake Bugg—below.
If you’re still needing a bit more insight into the utopian community at the heart of the Phillip Noyce-helmed adaptation, a new Starbucks-exclusive featurette that includes interviews with Katie Holmes, Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites gives us a deeper look at the particulars of the world Lowry created in her books. Watch the featurette for “The Giver,” along with a new TV spot, below.
