New 'Spider-Man' & 'Marvel Zombies' Animated Series Among Marvel Studios' Disney+ Day Announcements

It’s Disney+ Day—and a Marvelous one at that! To celebrate the anniversary of the Disney+ launch, Disney is pulling out all of the stops to make sure everyone knows that it’s really going to bring the content in 2022, which includes a hefty amount of new Marvel Studios shows. Throughout the morning Disney and Marvel social media channels were buzzing with nifty new title cards to set nerd-dom on fire, finally culminating in the release of a 15-minute Marvel Studios Disney+ Day 2021 video that included recaps of the shows already released and a sizzle reel of what’s in store for fans in the next year. And not just a few, a dozen shows were mentioned, nearly half of which were unannounced.

Of the shows that were teased, a number of prominent unannounced projects were of the animated variety, including “Marvel Zombies,” seemingly a spin-off from “What If?” Season 1, taking place entirely in the version of the MCU overrun with zombie versions of your favorite heroes. The original “What If?” episode was based on a popular Marvel Comics series that followed a team of remaining Avengers trying to survive in a zombie-filled post-apocalyptic wasteland. The episode ended in a tease for what’s to come—the team of remaining Avengers led by Spider-Man heading to Wakanda where an Infinity Gauntlet-wielding zombie Thanos is awaiting their arrival.

In addition, there were several animated series announced with little to no details known at this time outside of their intriguing titles. These additional titles included, “What If?” Season 2, a continuation of the series that just ended its run last month on Disney+. Next up, ‘X-Men ’97,’ a continuation of the beloved ’90s cartoon series featuring the return of many of the original voice actors. And finally, “Spider-Man: Freshman Year,” presumably following Peter Parker in his days as a newly bitten Spider-Man, a la “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Now, whether this is the same Peter Parker that we’ve become so fond of, played by the delightful Tom Holland, or if it’s a completely alternate take on the character is unclear.

Release dates for these series were not announced, though animation is notorious for having a very long development process. So, the odds of anything outside of maybe “What If?” Season 2 hitting Disney+ in 2022 seems like a longshot.
