The Future Of ‘Star Wars’: Lucasfilm, Let The Past Die, Kill It You Have To [The Playlist Podcast]

Happy “Star Wars” Day! Yes, today is May 4, aka May The Fourth, aka “Star Wars” Day, which is a made-up holiday that is used to convince fandom they should spend more money on merchandise about a galaxy far, far away. In less cynical terms, it’s a time to celebrate the franchise created by George Lucas decades ago that has inspired and influenced countless people around the world. And it’s also the perfect time to take a look at exactly where “Star Wars” is right now.

In this episode of The Playlist Podcast, Charles, Mike, and Brian are once again joined by The Playlist Editor-in-Chief Rodrigo Perez to talk about “Star Wars.” More specifically, the guys talk about where the franchise is right now (seemingly at a crossroads) and what this means for the future. Has the Disney era been a good time for “Star Wars?” (We know the box office receipts make the studio happy, but fan sentiment seems to paint another picture.) And is the plan for the future, using a lot of live-action TV series and various films to build out the franchise and move forward, the right way to go?

You’d be shocked to know that there are various opinions about the answers to those questions, but it’s a fun topic to discuss. Oh, and perhaps there’s even a little bit of a scoop in the discussion about a possible Young Leia appearance in a future “Star Wars” series.
