Stephen Dorff Joins Tarsem's 'War Of The Gods'

Sofia Coppola’s left of field casting of Stephen Dorff in “Somewhere” looks to have revitalized his career with the actor now joining Tarsem’s take on the swords and sandals genre, “War Of The Gods,” also known as “Dawn Of War.”

Dorff joins Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto and Kellan Lutz in the pic which will follow Cavill’s Theseus as he leads men and gods alike into battle against titans in order to save mankind. Dorff will play Stavros, a master thief who joins Theseus on his quest with Lutz as the lord of the sea Poseidon; Rourke as the ancient Greek ruler King Hyperion; and Pinto as the oracle priestess, Phaedra.

Visual magician Tarsem previously described the film as “Caravaggio meets ‘Fight Club,'” likely drawing the attention of studio execs on their 3D murder rampage. Production on the film had been pushed back for a decision to be made on whether to film the pic in 3D though it’s still not known which way to film will proceed. One way or another, it seems inevitable the film will hit theaters in the new format whether it’s shot that way or via a post-production conversion.

Shooting begins next month in Montreal for a planned 11/11/11 release via Universal.
