Steve Carell Teaming With 'The Office' Creator For New Netflix Comedy Series 'Space Force'

Steve Carell is teaming up with the creator of “The Office,” Greg Daniels, for a brand-new workplace comedy series. But this time, they’re not making paper. Nope, for this new series, the actor is going to lead the cast of “Space Force,” a workplace comedy that will follow the day-to-day of the newly-created sixth branch of the military, which does…something in space.

Netflix released a new teaser to announce the series. But alas, the teaser doesn’t do much other than tease that the series does exist, starring Steve Carell, and is created by both the actor and Daniels. But we can infer from the title and what little information that is given what “Space Force” will likely entail.

For those not hip to the popular 2018 news, President Donald Trump announced that he would create Space Force as the space equivalent of the Air Force. No true details were given, but the news quickly became the fodder for late-night talk show hosts and comedians, and apparently, now Netflix.

“Space Force” marks the first return to the starring role in a TV series for Carell since he led “The Office.” Since then, he’s gone on to become a major movie star, primarily on the drama side of things, and an Oscar nominee. Last year, it was announced that his first return to TV would be for Apple and the upcoming Jennifer Aniston/Reese Witherspoon morning news comedy series, but he’s only listed as a “special guest star” and is likely only in a recurring role.

THR doesn’t give specifics on how much it’s going to cost Netflix to get Carell back in a TV series but says, “Sources say Carell’s salary for ‘Space Force’ — including co-creator and exec producer fees — sets a new overall record for talent, likely topping the $1 million per episode paydays that the cast of CBS’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’ previously netted.” So yeah, the streaming service is banking on this being a massive hit.

There’s not a detailed synopsis for the series yet, but the just-released teaser does say, “The goal of the new branch is to ‘defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks’ … or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”

Sadly, there’s no release date, as of yet, but we can assume that Netflix wants to get this released as soon as possible.
