‘Strange World’ Teaser: Jake Gyllenhaal Teams With ‘Raya’ Filmmakers For A Throwback Animated Disney Film

What do you get when you combine the action and adventure of an old sci-fi serial and the modern animation of Walt Disney Studios? Apparently, you get a new animated film, “Strange World,” that even comes with a vocal performance from none other than Jake Gyllenhaal.

As seen in the teaser trailer for “Strange World,” the film is a throwback to the pulp, sci-fi adventures of yesteryear but with a glossy Disney sheen. “Strange World” stars the voice of Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, the son of a legendary explorer. While we’re not given much in the way of plot, it’s clear that Searcher Clade is thrown unexpectedly into the deep end when it comes to adventures, traveling to a, uh, strange new world where he has to contend with all sorts of weird creatures.

“Strange World” comes from co-directors Don Hall (“Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), the latter of who also wrote the film. It’s unclear by the marketing if “Strange World” is heading to theaters or if it’ll debut on streaming, but the film is definitely set to arrive, one way or another, on November 23. Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Here’s the synopsis:

Jake Gyllenhaal (“The Guilty,” “Spider-Man: Far from Home”) lends his voice to Searcher Clade, the son of a steadfast explorer. The original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest—and by far— most crucial mission.
