'Suspiria': New Look At Tilda Swinton As Madame Blanc Is Gloriously Witchy

There’s a strange phenomenon almost fanboy/girl-esque hysteria brewing with, of all things, director Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 horror film “Suspiria.” Hey, we’re all for it, but it’s almost disarmingly odd that some moviegoers seem more psyched for it than any other major blockbuster, superhero movie or big event movie this year. It’s heartening, really, but just maybe a little surprising.

Guadagnino, of course, directed the Oscar-nominated “Call Me By Your Name” and 2016’s “A Bigger Splash,” ironically another remake (1969’s “Le Piscine” directed by Jacques Deray, starring Alain Delon, Romy Schneider, Maurice Ronet and Jane Birkin). And yes, “Suspiria” is a horror cult classic, but fandom around the film is next level right now.

To ratchet up the hype following some eerie af trailers, Amazon Studios has released a new image of Tilda Swinton in EW, and it is gloriously fierce.

“Madame Blanc is a woman who is in a moment of conflict,” the filmmaker told EW of Swinton’s character. “The conflict between art and magic is something that is seen in her face.”

The film stars Dakota Johnson, an ambitious young dancer at the center of a world-renowned dance company. A darkness swirls within, one that will engulf the artistic director, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

Tilda Swinton plays one of the dance troupe’s teachers. “Oh my gosh, I just adore her so deeply,” says Johnson of Swinton. “I want to make movies with her forever, and I hope we will. It’s just an amazing, amazing friendship and collaboration that I have, that I’m so grateful for in my life.”

“Suspiria” also features Mia Goth, Lutz Ebersdorf, Angela Winkler, Ingrid Caven, Elena Fokina, Sylvie Testud, Renée Soutendijk, Christine LeBoutte, Małgosia Bela, Jessica Harper and Chloë Grace Moretz. Guadagnino’s “Suspiria” will make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September and will make its way into theaters on November 2. Thom Yorke of Radiohead composed the score, and the movie will be a reasonably long 152 minutes long. Behold Tilda Swinton in the film and fixate on the image for hours.
