Taika Waititi Reunites With His 'Green Lantern' Co-Star Ryan Reynolds For New Action-Comedy, 'Free Guy'

It’s the “Green Lantern” reunion you’ve been waiting for! Taika Waititi and Ryan Reynolds are about to team up once again (hopefully, with better results than that 2011 abomination) for an upcoming action-comedy film.

THR is reporting that Waititi, along with actor Utkarsh Ambudkar, has signed on to co-star in the film “Free Guy,” which stars Reynolds and is directed by Shawn Levy. The film follows a background character in a video game (Reynolds), who realizes he’s a fictional character and must team up to help save his world from the creators who are threatening to shut it down.

As alluded to up top, Waititi and Reynolds have already shown they have pretty good chemistry on-screen (at least as much as anyone can show good chemistry in the film) in the Warner Bros. film “Green Lantern.” While the film was terrible and quickly sunk Reynolds’ hope of being a superhero (until “Deadpool,” at least), Waititi and Reynolds were both pretty funny in their roles. And it’s safe to say that both have refined their acting craft quite a bit in the almost-decade since that film.

Waititi and Ambudkar (who is probably best known for his work in films like “Blindspotting” and “Pitch Perfect,” and will be seen in the upcoming “Mulan”) join an already-great cast that includes Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, and Lil Rel Howery.

The film is directed by Levy, based on a script from Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. Levy has been working on the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” most recently, having directed numerous episodes of the hit show.

“Free Guy” doesn’t have a release date yet, but is one of the few Fox carryovers that will survive the merger with Disney.
