Here Are 'Climax' Director Gaspar Noé's 18 Favorite Films

Hey, it’s #ThrowbackThursday and each week we look to the past and highlight something in cinema history that’s fascinating, amusing, perhaps something you never knew or have seen, you name it.

This week, we’ve decided to do something different for Throwback Thursday. Instead of featuring a famous filmmaker discussing a previous project or telling a fun story, we want to focus on giving readers a chance to see which films have influenced a filmmaker and are personal favorites.

Today, we’re focusing on the favorite films of Argentine filmmaker Gaspar Noé. The writer-director has created various music videos and shorts, but is best known for his feature films, which include “Irréversible,” “Enter the Void,” and his most recent project, “Climax.” The latter of which recently premiered to pretty rave reviews during the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes.

In a video, a fan of Noé scoured through interviews with the filmmaker to compile his list of favorite films. The 18 films selected are an eclectic bunch, that’s for sure. There are classics, which are at the top of almost every cinephile’s list, including “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “King Kong,” and “Taxi Driver.”

But with a filmmaker like Noé, you have come to expect a some less obvious choices. The controversial “Salo” is on the list, as is “Island of Lost Souls,” “Safe,” and “Amour.” Needless to say, if you planned on devoting a weekend (more likely a week) to devouring all 18 films, it will definitely be a unique journey through the history of film.
