With shooting wrapped and Kevin Smith in the midst of cutting his upcoming horror flick “Red State,” hoping to have it ready for the Sundance Film Festival in January, the director has unveiled the teaser poster for the film. The effectively chilly poster, Smith boasts, was not created by an ad agency but by “Red State” producer Jon Gordon‘s assistant Melissa Bloom.
Smith writes on his site, “So we’ve got a marketing image that was put together by someone who was on set every day, integral to the process that produced the film which inspired this image. This isn’t the work of some gun for hire who’s doing six other campaigns; we’re not just one of many. The marketer is actually family, RED from pre-production all the way through wrap, so she’s got an insight into the flick that no ad agency could ever boast (not even one-time Glo-Coat golden boy Don Draper over at SCDP). I’ll take passion over pedigree any day.”
While plot details on the film have been kept tightly under wraps, what we do know is that it will run a lean 80 or 85 minutes and according to Smith, is a Fred Phelps-inspired picture that is an “exploitation flick about angel worship.” So you can definitely call us curious about this one. As for the soundtrack, if you are the best ever death metal band in Denton, you may have biggest break of your career yet: the director hit Twitter last week and revealed he’s on the hunt for speed metal and country music for the film, and he’s willing to take submissions, so if you’re got what it takes, you can send him an email.
As Smith continues cutting the film, and in the lead up to Sundance, you can probably expect more bits and pieces to hit – perhaps even a trailer? We’ll have to wait and see. The film starring Kevin Pollack, Michael Parks, Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Michael Angarano, Stephen Root and John Goodman currently doesn’t have a distributor but should likely hit theaters next year.
