‘The Sea Beast’ Trailer: Academy Award-Winning Animated Filmmaker Chris Williams’ Takes You On A Monstrous Adventure

Like all well-rounded streaming services, Netflix wants a balanced portfolio, which means animated movies for kids and all the other genres they already have. Their latest animated adventure is “The Sea Beast,” by Academy Award-winning veteran director Chris Williams.

If Williams’ name sounds familiar it should. The filmmaker has directed, or co-directed animated features such as “Moana” (2016), “Big Hero Six” (2014), and “Bolt” (2008). Part of the animation industry for over 25 years, Williams has also written for big Disney titles like “Mulan” (1998) and “The Emperor’s New Groove” (2000).

This isn’t the only time Netflix has been able to draw creatives away from Disney. Names like Alex Hirsch (“Gravity Falls”), Darla K. Anderson (“Coco”), Kenny Ortega (High School Musical”), and Ronnie Del Carmen (“Inside Out”) have all been part of Disney and coaxed over to the house of Netflix in recent years.

“The Sea Beast” is written by Nell Benjamin and Chris Williams, this will be the first time the pair have worked together on a project. Benjamin mainly works on musical productions such as “Mean Girls The Musical” and “Legally Blonde: The Musical” (2007).

The movie is set to be a heart-warming, children’s adventure set by the sea, but filled with danger and thrills too.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes – and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he’s saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history.

“The Boys” (2019) actor Karl Urban leads the voice cast of “The Sea Beast” along with Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Dan Stevens, Kathy Burke, Baraka May, Zaris-Angel Hator, Benjamin Plessala, and Kaya McLean.

“The Sea Beast” will hit Netflix on July 8. Check out the new trailer below.
