‘The Suicide Squad’ First Look: James Gunn Reveals His Characters And Behind-The-Scenes Footage

Warner Bros. and DC Films have had a lot of false starts. Take “Suicide Squad,” from director David Ayer. That film was so poorly received that WB decided to reboot the entire franchise. It came at a fortuitous time for the studio: James Gunn had just been temporarily fired from “Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3” and in a big coup, Warner’s was able to get him to switch teams. The result? “The Suicide Squad.” Today at the virtual DC Fandome, Gunn gave a first look at most of the cast.

Back in September 2019, Gunn confirmed the return of several high-profile characters from the first movie, including, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Gunn also released an impressive character list on Twitter, with a caveat: don’t get too attached to any of the new names. This is a ‘Suicide Squad’ film, after all.

This new list of “The Suicide Squad” cast includes:

  • Michael Rooker as Savant
  • Flula Borg as Javelin
  • David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man
  • Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2 (the two is very important)
  • Idris Elba as Bloodsport
  • Steve Agee as the voice of King Shark
  • Mayling Ng as Mongal
  • Peter Capaldi as Thinker
  • Alice Braga as Solsoria
  • Pete Davidson as Blackguard
  • Nathan Fillion as TDK
  • Sean Gunn as Weasel
  • John Cena as Peacemaker

If you’ve attended a Zoom happy hour at any point over the last few months, you have a sense of how the ‘Suicide Squad’ panel went. More than a dozen big personalities, most of them yelling and cracking jokes and dunking on Michael Rooker with alarming regularity. As a precursor to the kind of chemistry we’ll see in the finished film – and as a quick glimpse at what each actor would bring to film – it was a fun little social activity.

And as if the new cast announcements were not enough, the panel ended with a special behind-the-scenes feature highlighting some of the cast in action – it’s worth it just to hear John Cena describe his character as “a douchey Captain America,” something none of us would have predicted about a year ago.
