'The Lighthouse' Trailer: Robert Pattinson & Willem Dafoe Find Terror By The Sea

We’re not going to get into the whole “elevated horror” debate, but for better or worse, Robert Eggers‘ “The Witch” is often cited as a turning point for modern day horror. So, genre fans have been eagerly anticipating his follow-up, “The Lighthouse,” and soon we’ll see the results after four years of waiting.

Starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe — and note, they are the only two credited actors on the film — plot details are still kept under wraps, but the film follows two lighthouse keepers on a remote island. However, Dafoe recently described the picture as being in the vein of Tarkovsky, so it sounds like it’ll be a mood piece.

Here’s the official synopsis:

From Robert Eggers, the visionary filmmaker behind the modern horror masterpiece The Witch, comes this hypnotic and hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

As you might’ve guessed from the official images, “The Lighthouse” is in black-and-white. But instead of shooting in color and then color grading it to black-and-white, Eggers kept it as old school as possible.

“It’s set in 1890, and we’re shooting on 35mm black and white stock, virtually unheard of nowadays,” editor Louise Ford said last year (via Indiewire). “Most black and white movies are shot in color, and then converted to black and white in post. The dailies look beautiful; it’s very exciting.”

We can’t wait. A24 will release “The Lighthouse” on October 18. You can watch the trailer below.
