'Them' Trailer: Lena Waithe's Amazon Prime Series Tackles Racism & Otherworldy Evil In 1950s Los Angeles

With shows such as “American Horror Story,” we’ve seen the horror-themed anthology series success only get bigger and bigger in recent years. Amazon Prime Video is hoping to capitalize on that with the upcoming thriller anthology series, “Them,” brought to you by Little Marvin (“The Time Is Now”) and executive produced by Lena Waithe (“The Chi“).

As seen in the trailer for “Them,” the anthology’s first season opens in the 1950s as a Black family from North Carolina moves to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles. Considering the time the series occurs, it’s not shocking to reveal how the white neighbors aren’t too pleased with the Black family coming to their neck of the woods. But that sort of racist evil is just the tip of the iceberg in “Them.”

The thriller series cast includes Deborah Ayorinde, Ashley Thomas, Alison Pill, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Melody Hurd, and Ryan Kwanten.

In our review of the first two episodes of “Them” from this year’s SXSW, we said, “If, as mentioned, the first episode feels like the set-up for a great movie, the second has the feeling of said movie being haphazardly adapted into a series, introducing all sorts of new strands and ideas and bits of backstory that have the cumulative effect of flattening that airtight first installment, and turning it into yet another flabby binge that overstays its welcome. Maybe ‘Them’ recovers or synthesizes its materials more smoothly. At this point, it could go either way.”

Here’s the synopsis:

From breakout creator Little Marvin, the ten-episode Amazon Original series premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime Video Friday, April 9, 2021. Them is a limited anthology series that explores terror in America. The 1950s-set first season centers on a Black family who moves from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood during the period known as The Great Migration. The family’s idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces, next-door and otherworldly, threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.

“Them” debuts on Amazon Prime Video on April 9. You can watch the new trailer below.
