British actor Tom Hiddleston is making quite the push for a career in television between “Loki” and the upcoming Apple TV+ series “The Essex Serpent.” He’s now looking to reunite with Apple for a harrowing story about a real-life adventurer. A bit of a change-up for the actor known for mostly playing within the fantastical settings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Deadline has revealed that Hiddleston will be playing Henry Worsely in a new Apple limited series that focuses on the British special forces officer that trekked across Antarctica on foot in 2015. “The White Darkness” is a compelling story inspired by real events.

Worsley’s story is chronicled in the book of the same name authored by David Grann. It was developed by “Pachinko” creator Soo Hugh who will co-showrun the project alongside Mark Heyman (“Black Swan,” “Strange Angel“).

Henry Worsley was a devoted husband and father and a decorated British special forces officer who believed in honor and sacrifice. He was also a man obsessed. He spent his life idolizing Ernest Shackleton, the nineteenth-century polar explorer, who tried to become the first person to reach the South Pole and later sought to cross Antarctica on foot. Shackleton never completed his journeys, but he repeatedly rescued his men from certain death, and emerged as one of the greatest leaders in history.
In 2008, Worsley set out across Antarctica with two other descendants of Shackleton’s crew, battling the freezing, desolate landscape, life-threatening physical exhaustion, and hidden crevasses. Yet when he returned home he felt compelled to go back. On November 2015, at age 55, Worsley bid farewell to his family and embarked on his most perilous quest: to walk across Antarctica alone.
Hiddleston is also expected to reprise his popular Marvel role as the god of mischief in season two of the Multiverse-focused series “Loki” as it was announced that “Moon Knight” directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead would be taking over the Disney+ show from its previous helmer, Kate Herron.
