Nine long years elapsed between Shane Carruth‘s 2004 breakout debut “Primer” and his astonishing 2013 release “Upstream Color,” but it seemed like the filmmaker was going to start moving at a quicker pace. At the end of 2015, word emerged that the fiercely independent filmmaker had signed with big-time Hollywood agency WME and lined up a ridiculously stacked cast including Anne Hathaway, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe, Chloë Grace Moretz, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Abraham Attah and Jeff Goldblum for his next movie, “The Modern Ocean.” Then…nothing. Carruth has kept busy by scoring “The Girlfriend Experience,” but there’s no word on his next feature, though Holland is making us really hope it comes together soon.

Chatting with Collider, the current star of “The Lost City Of Z” and the next Peter Parker was hugely enthusiastic about the Carruth project, though he notes he’s no longer involved.
“I love Shane’s movies, I think he’s a great director; ‘Primer’ and ‘Upstream Color’ are awesome. [‘The Modern Ocean’] is I think the best script I’ve ever read. It’s the craziest idea for a movie ever; it’s so cool. I actually keep meaning to get my agents on the phone to talk about it, to try and see if we can kick it up again. But not I’m still attached to it I guess, but I hope we get to make it in the future,” he said.
The movie has been described as detailing the competition for valuable shipping routes, the search for a hidden cache of priceless material, and the powerful need for vengeance that will converge in a spectacular battle on the rolling decks of behemoth cargo ships. Good lord, if that doesn’t get your cinephile brain drooling, I don’t know what will.
Somebody please give Carruth the money to make this thing. Netflix…this could be yours…
