‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Trailer: Tom Cruise Flies Back Into The Danger Zone

One of the best things about the original “Top Gun” was the incredible soundtrack, who doesn’t jam out every time they hear “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins. Well after 33 years, Tom Cruise is back in “Top Gun: Maverick.”

The late Tony Scott, who directed the original film but sadly committed suicide back in 2012, spoke to HitFix back in 2010 about a “Top Gun” sequel. He said, “This world fascinated me, because it’s so different from what it was originally. But I don’t want to do a remake. I don’t want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie.” it would seem that this is what we are getting with Kosinski on board.

While we have a completely new film to digest, we are also going to see new characters. Remember Goose? (Anthony Edwards) Well, we will see his son “Rooster” (they really are playing on the bird theme here) who will be played by Miles Teller (“Whiplash”). The banter between Maverick and Goose was legendary, everyone wanted a best friend relationship like those two, but it will be interesting to see how Maverick treats Goose’s son, with Maverick acting like a father figure to Rooster perhaps, it has been documented that Cruise and Teller spent time together for “chemistry tests.”

There is also no Charlie (Kelly McGillis) in this film, instead, we have Jennifer Connelly (“Alita: Battle Angel”) who will be playing Maverick’s love interest. She is a single mother who runs a bar near the naval base. Her role is different to McGillis’, but it’s just a case of how her character will differ from McGillis’ and are we just watching a rehash of what we’ve seen before.

One thing that hasn’t changed though is Iceman, who Val Kilmer will be reprising. He nearly didn’t make it into the sequel until his own social media campaign got him into the film. The dynamic between Maverick and Iceman would have changed, from rivals to mates, this will be a changed Iceman but hopefully still with that Kilmer swagger.

Along for the ride in the skies comes Jon Hamm (“Baby Driver”), Ed Harris (“Geostorm”) and Monica Barbaro (“Chicago Justice”). Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the 1986 film, is back to produce again with Tencent Pictures, Skydance Media and TC Productions. While distribution is being handled by Paramount Pictures.

Here is a short synopsis:

Pete “Maverick” Mitchell mentors a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.

The film will be released on June 26, 2020, perfect summer viewing. Watch the new trailer below.
