The new season tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Mahershala Ali stars as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. Carmen Ejogo and Stephen Dorff also star. Created by Nic Pizzolatto, the writer and producer also directed some of the third season.

Jeremy Sauliner (“Hold The Dark“) was originally supposed to helm half the season, but he left due to creative differences with (the rumored-to-be-difficult) Pizzolatto. Daniel Sackheim, a veteran TV director, working on such shows as “The Leftovers,” “Ozark,” “The Americans,” and the recent “Jack Ryan” took over after Saulnier departed (he did manage to helm two episodes before he left).

Location is everything, the show’s creator said earlier this years. “The mystery of the deep woods. The fog over the mountains. The rivers. The water. The sense of scale when you get out to some of this nature. Also, what the buildings say about the lives behind them,” Pizzolato said. “So I feel like people will see it as an extension of character, something that embodies characters’ emotional journeys while influencing those journeys.”

Don’t expect a hurried clip either. “My character would not move or operate the same way if he was in New York,” Ali said at the time. “I’ve given myself permission to go slower even if they want me to speed up a bit. You end up essentially aligning yourself with the frequency of the pace. And that’s how something will resonate as being truthful or not.”

We’ve seen a teaser recently, but a full trailer for the third season should be here soon.
