'True Detective' Season 3 Moving Forward, Director Being Sought

We already learned at the beginning of the month that Mahershala Ali was rolling into the brewing third season of “True Detective.” But such is the excitement for a new batch of episodes, that the confirmation of the casting at the Television Critics Association summer press tour sent a fresh wave of excitement through the blogosphere. However, more pertinent is that the scripts are taking shape and the hunt is on for someone to get behind the camera.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys has provided a small update on “True Detective” season three, which is nearing a green light from the network. “I have read five scripts for a third season,” he said. “I’m very, very impressed and excited about what I’ve read. I don’t want to give away the storyline, but I really think they’re terrific.”

“We are talking to directors, and when we have a director we want to hire, it will be a go,” he added.

Not to overly scrutinize these comments, but it is interesting to note that Bloys said director and directors, which perhaps indicates that season three will return to the single filmmaker approach of the Cary Fukunaga helmed first season. As you’ll recall, the rushed second season took a more traditional approach, with a handful of directors helming the episodes.

All said, it looks like there’s strong momentum behind “True Detective,” and I wouldn’t be surprised if HBO wants the new season ready for 2018, especially if the final season of “Game Of Thrones” doesn’t arrive until 2019. [EW/Deadline]
