“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” isn’t the most talked about original series on Netflix. The series may not have the same pop culture impact as something like “Stranger Things,” but ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ was one of the first Netflix Originals to really hit big for the streaming service. Not only that, but the comedy series is one of the most critically-acclaimed on Netflix, earning over a dozen Emmy nominations over the last three seasons. However, according to a new report, the series is coming to an end.
Deadline is reporting that “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is going to end its run after the upcoming fourth season but will possibly be capped off with a series finale film. Nothing has been announced, and the details are being worked out, but apparently, after production has ended on the fourth season (which is broken up into two parts), writers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock will begin work on a film to end the series.
For those that haven’t seen the series, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” follows the life of the titular character, played by the hilarious Ellie Kemper, as she adjusts to modern life after being a member of a doomsday cult for 15 years. Armed with an infectious positive attitude, Kimmy deals with modern struggles alongside her friends Titus Andromedon, Jaqueline, and Lillian.
As for what fans can expect in the fourth season, not much is known. However, Netflix recently released a promo for the May release, and while it doesn’t show much in the way of plot, it does give viewers an idea of the type of silly humor that you can find in the series.
The video is basically an alternative opening for the show, done in a “Mary Tyler Moore” style. Kimmy interacts with the world, wearing her trademark smile, as she encounters a homeless person on the street and her job at Giztoob.
Odds are, if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll love the video and if you’re not, but the video makes you laugh, then you should most definitely watch the Netflix original.
The first half of season 4 of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” debuts on Netflix on May 30.
