'The Unicorn' Trailer: Everyone's Obsessed With Having A Threesome

“You guys used to be fun,” an old friend (Lucy Hale) and intriguing minx says to her old pals (Nick Rutherford, Lauren Lapkus). And with that jarring pronouncement, a long-engaged couple is shocked and comes to the realization that they are boring and unadventurous people. So, the new comedy, “The Unicorn” that debuted at the SXSW Film Festival last year tracks a couple as they set out on a quest to spice up their relationship. But, if your relationship needed some spicing up, how far would you go?

A threesome, and all its complications, both emotional and logistical seems to be the full preoccupation of the movie which is directed by Robert Schwartzman, the actor/musician/filmmaker and younger brother of Jason Schwartzman. Known as the frontman for the rock band Rooney, Robert is quite the multi-hyphenate who has acted in the movies of his cousin Sophia Coppola (“Lost In Translation”), “The Unicorn” is his sophomore feature-length effort following 2016’s “Dreamland.”

Back to the couple, their idea of a threesome and need to prove to themselves they are not square. Will it work out?

Here is the official synopsis:

When an engaged couple, Caleb (Nick Rutherford) and Malory (Lauren Lapkus), is forced to visit Palm Springs for a weekend to celebrate Malory’s parents’ 25th wedding vow renewal, they discover the apparent secret to their happy marriage. Determined to properly celebrate their own “re-engagement,” they set out on a wild night, but this fun and innocent new experience takes an intense turn, exposing deeper relationship problems and threatening their future together.

The film also co-stars Beck Bennett, Dree Hemingway, Darrell Britt- Gibson, Maya Kazan, John Kapelos, Beverly D’Angelo and Kyle Mooney. “The Unicorn,” is based on a story by Robert Schwartzman and written by Rutherford, Kirk C. Johnson, and Will Elliott

“The Unicorn” premiered at SXSW in 2018 where it was received well and was dubbed a “romantic comedy with a point.” As the film aims society’s overall obsession with relationship labels, “The Unicorn” hits theaters on Friday, February 1, 2019, and will be available on Digital and On Demand on Tuesday, February 5.
