'Vice,' 'Amazing Grace,' & More Added To 2019 Berlin Film Festival

This year’s Berlin Film Festival has announced its Berlinale Special and Competition programs and there are some clear highlights worth mentioning, which means that this year’s line-up is one of the more interesting in recent years.

Obviously, the big name showing in Germany this year is Adam McKay’sVice.” Though it’s already in the middle of its US theatrical release and deep into Oscar season, the Dick Cheney biopic will premiere out of competition at the festival. Another out of competition release is the highly-anticipated documentary/concert film featuring Aretha Franklin, “Amazing Grace,” which was announced in late-2018 and is finally going to be released after being on the shelf for more than 40 years.

Farewell to the Night,” which stars Catherine Deneuve is getting its world premiere at the festival, but as with the other films, will be playing out of competition. Another world premiere comes from acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who made a splash on last year’s festival circuit with his film “Shadow.” This year, he’s premiering his latest film, “One Second.”
