You never know where you’re going to get great TV from these days. Some of the most acclaimed shows on air come from companies that a decade ago were known for sending you DVDs or books through the post. The History Channel and A&E now broadcast acclaimed dramas. And the two hottest and most critically acclaimed shows of the last year air on USA and Lifetime, not traditionally known for their cult TV hits.

Could the next must-see show come from… Oprah’s network? OWN, principally known as far as scripted stuff goes for Tyler Perry’s various shows, debuted their well-reviewed mega-church drama “Greenleaf” last night, and used the commercial breaks to drop the first trailer for something that might be even more anticipated: the first TV show from “Selma” director Ava DuVernay.
As noticed by our pals at Shadow And Act, the show is a family drama about three estranged siblings (Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Kofi Siriboe) who reunite to run a sugarcane farm. It’s based on a novel by writer Natalie Baszile, and while DuVernay isn’t directing the whole thing as once planned, she did write and direct the pilot, will direct multiple first season episodes, and hand-pick the rest of the helmers (who are all women) too.
The teaser looks intense, stylish and very DuVernay-esque, and we look forward to seeing more. It’ll hit OWN sometime in the fall. Watch it below.
