Plus 2 Clips From ‘Submarine’ & TV Spots From ‘Horrible Bosses’
Another day, another batch of video footage goodness from upcoming comedy releases. Although goodness may be a stretch when it comes to the most substantial: the full trailer for the Jim Carrey vehicle “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” A loose adaptation of the children’s book classic, with “Mean Girls” director Mark Waters at the helm, the teaser didn’t exactly look hugely promising, and if anything the full length version is worse, showing Carrey sleepwalking through the exact same dad-who-neglects-his-kids-because-he-works-too-hard beats as he was fifteen years ago in “Liar Liar.” Just think: only a year ago, Noah Baumbach was going to direct this. Warner Bros have tried a bold marketing technique for mega-sequel “The Hangover Part II” — selling a comedy without including any funny bits in the marketing campaign. Two new clips have arrived from the film, and they’re both handsomely lit, they both show an increased level of action and production value, and they both substitute actual jokes for callbacks to the original film. Hopefully they’re holding the good stuff back for the full film, but word is that they haven’t. [EW]
Looking like a far more worthy successor to the original ‘Hangover’ is “Horrible Bosses,” which stars Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day as three friends who decide to kill their employers, Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston. The full trailer made it look like it could pip “Bridesmaids” as the comedy of the year so far, and two new TV spots continue to bring the funny (although prison rape jokes? It’s a bit 2006, isn’t it?) [Trailer Addict]
Finally, one film that we can guarantee is good is Richard Ayoade‘s “Submarine,” the festival hit that The Weinstein Company are about to unleash in the U.S. and so here a couple of clips. One focuses on the fledgling relationship between Oliver (Craig Roberts) and Jordana (Yasmin Paige), while the other has Oliver having an awkward chat with his mother (Sally Hawkins). All three land sooner rather than later: “The Hangover Part II” is first up, on May 27th, “Submarine” follows on June 3rd, “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” hits June 17th, and “Horrible Bosses” brings up the rear on July 8th.
