Rawwwwwwwwr! This summer saw "Godzilla" come stomping back into theaters under the stewardship of "Monsters" director Gareth Edwards, to enormous success: the film made $200 million domestically, and over $500 Million worldwide, immediately launching a new franchise (the second film is due for release in 2018, once Edwards is done with his "Star Wars" spin-off, which, like his first two movies, will hopefully focus on two monsters trying to fuck each other).
But the film got a more mixed reaction from critics and audiences. Some (like this writer) thought that the film was a stunning and bold take on the legendary lizard-beast, others found that the movie was a disappointing and bleak picture with thin human characters, particularly Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s bland leading man.
Well, if you’re in the latter camp, you’ll enjoy that, ahead of the film’s release on DVD/Blu-ray next week (and as the movie hits VOD), the Honest Trailers folk have taken on the movie, focusing on many of the complaints most popularly voiced. Having never seen an Honest Trailer before, it strikes this writer as deeply unfunny nitpicky frat-boy bullshit, but some seem to find it useful: in an interview this week, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" directors Joe & Anthony Russo praised the online phenomenon, saying that Honest Trailers helped them ask themselves "how sound is the logic in your film?"
One of the complaints raised in the "Godzilla" Honest Trailer is that there isn’t enough of the title character in the film, and the HT folks are not alone in holding this opinion: some other enterprising iMovie-owner, via /Film) has cut together what they claim are the only eight minutes in which "Godzilla" is actually on screen (Honest Trailers come to a different figure, eleven minutes). For god’s sake, no one show these people "Jaws," they’ll have an aneurysm. "Godzilla" is on iTunes and the like right now, and hits home video next Tuesday, September 16th.
