It seems like it just isn’t blockbuster movie season without Johnny Depp wearing funny hats, clothing from Dickensian thrift shops and/or lots of makeup, but this summer he’s back with almost all of the above in “The Lone Ranger.” The quaint, black-and-white 1950s TV show has been brought to the 21st century with a soaring budget of over $200 million and a bag full of special effects. And now a brand-spanking new trailer has come over the horizon, promising both big time spectacle and Depp quirkiness in equally large servings.
The plot will find Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Depp) teaming with John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, as they get into action and adventure fighting greed and corruption. What that exactly means hasn’t been clear yet, as specifics of the plot have been kept at bay for big setpieces in the spots for the movie so far, but this new trailer opens things up a lot more. We find out that the Lone Ranger’s quest is to find out who killed his brother and something or other about who controls the railroadszzzzzz…..omg mega train sequences! Gore Verbinski has long been saying he really wanted to create something spectacular — once promising the biggest train scene of all time before the budget got trimmed — but either way it looks like he went full throttle here.
“The Lone Ranger” saves the day on July 3rd. Thoughts?
