Watch: Steven Spielberg Reacts To Oscar Nominations For 'Jaws' In Vintage Video, Plus Trailer For 'Jaws 19'

nullNext Friday, Steven Spielberg geeks like myself will (hopefully) be turning out in droves to buy tickets to the master director’s latest film, the very serious-and-handsome-looking Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies.” The Tom Hanks-starring period drama has garnered mostly favorable responses following its premiere at the New York Film Festival (our own Rodrigo Perez seemed to like it just fine… here’s his review) and is poised to be a contender during the upcoming Oscar season.

Spielberg has been in the game for decades and, at this point, he’s considered an immovable, practically monolithic creative force: an undeniable legend in his field. And yet, it’s easy to forget, that the modern grandfather of blockbuster cinema was, at one point, an ambitious, intelligent, and vulnerable young artist who simply hoped people would either see his movies or recognize him for the hard work he had put into them. In a video making the rounds from 1976, we get to see a younger, bespectacled Spielberg addressing the camera and promising “complete sweep” of the Oscars for his masterwork “Jaws.” As we now know, things didn’t quite turn out that way: the film only picked up four nods (still rather impressive, but not what Spielberg was hoping for), for Best Picture (it lost to Milos Forman’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”), Best Score, Best Editing, and Best Sound, and won three. Still, not a bad showing.

While we’re on the subject of Spielberg, now is as good a time as any, I suppose, to share the trailer for “Jaws 19,” first promised to the world as a gag in "Back To The Future Part II." It’s a clever bit of marketing from Universal, who is getting ready for Marty McFly’s arrival on October 21st. “Bridge of Spies” lands in theatres on October 16th.
