It broke per-screen averages last weekend — 9th all-time and 1st in limited — and with Wes Anderson’s delightful “The Grand Budapest Hotel” opening in more theaters at the end of this week, Fox Searchlight has released a couple of more trailers to move those tickets but not before Anderson has a thing or two to say about one of the more controversial films released last year.
During a recent stop at Charlie Rose, Anderson was asked about his relationship with Martin Scorsese — a long-time admirer of Anderson since “Bottle Rocket,” and even penned an essay extolling Anderson’s virtues that was used in that film’s Criterion release — which lead to him gushing about the iconic director. In particular, Anderson singled out “The Wolf of Wall Street,” saying the controversial film was “so entertaining all the way through, you don’t even think about how big this thing is. How often have we seen what is basically a comedy of that length? But it has such power and energy and these surprises. Everytime Leonardo DiCaprio, in the middle of a voiceover, is suddenly talking to us on camera it’s just like a jolt of adrenaline.”
Anderson also talked about Scorsese’s love of screening movies on film for close friends, calling the screenings “a master class,” and he revealed that “The Darjeeling Limited” was inspired by a showing of “this Jean Renoir movie called ‘The River’ that I had never seen before,” adding that following the screening he had one thought: “I think I know what I want to do next.”
As for what Anderson has out now, the studio has released a new red-band trailer (via Yahoo!) along with a new TV spot. Watch both, along with the Charlie Rose interview (which starts at the 30-minute mark), below. You can check in to “The Grand Budapest Hotel” in select theaters now with a wider release this Friday.
