On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I focus entirely on Steve McQueen‘s new film “Widows,” an extremely rare thing at the cinema these days—a serious genre film made by and for adults—that we both highly recommend you seek out this weekend when it opens. This may just be the most impressive cast assembled for one film in recent memory, and everyone is doing top notch work. But we still find some faults in the film, somewhat overlapping with The Playlist’s review out of TIFF this year, but mainly landing on the issue of choosing the right medium to tell this story.
It’s a film so good that we actually wish it were even better. Is that fair? Probably not. However, there is a case to made that, in tightening up this adaptation of an 80s British mini-series by the same name, McQueen and his cast and crew have lost some character depth and clarity in the storytelling, instead delivering on cinematic thrills with a potent but complicated female empowerment angle. Lots to chew on. And so, we discuss!
