Wish List: David Fincher Reportedly Wants Christian Bale To Play Steve Jobs In Developing Biopic

Christian Bale, Fincher, Steve Jobs

Yes, the idea of Christian Bale playing Steve Jobs in a biopic is totally inspired. But let’s just make it clear: right now it’s just an idea.

Regardless, The Wrap reports that as Sony continues to develop their Aaron Sorkin-penned Steve Jobs biopic that has David Fincher circling to direct, the filmmaker is throwing down the gauntlet when it comes to casting. According to the trade, Fincher will “only take the reins of the project if Bale plays Jobs.” That’s a pretty hard line to draw in the sand. And certainly, while Bale is no doubt qualified to play the part, his box office track record can be all over the place (“American Hustle” good, “Out Of The Furnace” not so good commercially speaking). And one other detail? Dude hasn’t even been asked yet, so for all anyone knows, he may not even want to do it.

That being said, it’s hardly the first time Fincher has battled for casting, famously tangling with studio execs at Sony to get Rooney Mara into the lead role in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” And he’s well liked and respected that few will argue if he wants to cast someone the caliber of Bale (again, if the actor is interested and schedules work and all that fun stuff).

So for now, consider this news a spinning rainbow wheel in OS X, waiting for the system to catch up.
