Wong Kar-Wai To Direct Long Developing Gucci Fashion Family Drama, Megan Ellison Producing

Wong Kar-Wai never seems to be in a particular rush to make a movie, and his process tends to be long and involved. And in the three years since the release of the martial arts movie “The Grandmaster,” the auteur has been linked to a couple projects, including the drama “Blossoms,” and most recently, an 18-part online series that’s supposed to be his next gig. However, it looks like he’s also making room for a long-developing project about a fashion world powerhouse.

Mentioned in passing in THR‘s recent look at Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna, it’s revealed that Wong Kar-Wai is attached to directed a movie about the Gucci family, that also has Ridley Scott‘s Scott Free production company involved. Indeed, years and years ago, the movie — simply titled “Gucci” — had Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie linked to play Maurizio Gucci and his ex-wife Patrizia, with the story taking place across the ’70s and ’80s as a power struggle ensues for the top of the family dynasty. So, sounds pretty cool, and don’t expect those two stars to still be involved.

But again, this could be a long way off, either because Kar-Wai has other projects ahead of it, or simply because he takes however long he damn well pleases to make a movie. But it’s easy to see the appeal of having him direct this project, given that his fabulous eye for framing suits a fashion world story perfectly, though presumably his more freeform approach would need to be tailored for the demands of Hollywood moviemaking. But having been involved with Annapurna on “The Grandmaster,” it seems they were both happy with the middle ground of art and commerce that they found. [via Indiewire]
